Sultan McGee, born in Bermuda in 1945, learned to read there in a foundling home blessed with a large library. From 1959 to 1985 he made his home as a cook aboard merchant ships and in foreign ports. He has never been more than 10 miles inland in his life. His favorite ports are Marseilles and Zanzibar, off the Swahili Coast. He now lives on a houseboat on the Southern California coast, playing the drums, writing stories and playing gin rummy on the wharf. He keeps his location private and his phone unlisted to protect Hack Wilson and Mickey Cochran baseball cards, among others, which he always keeps with him, along with a collection of butterflies, for good luck. The houseboat is pointed toward the south in accord with the principles of Feng Shui. He has witnessed a murder, nearly drowned on his one attempt to surf and survived three shipwrecks in typhoons. When he left the sea for good, he vowed never to cook again. He eats all meals at his reserved corner stool in a boxcar diner nearby. He enjoys movies, especially the great ones he missed during 20 years at sea. He reads in the public library - journals, short fiction and histories. He writes only when the mood strikes, which may last for several days and nights or not all for weeks on end. | |
